Aberdeen isn't a tourist town. That's exactly why it's worth the detour — the real story is quieter than the version most people go looking for.
Most visitors chasing Kurt Cobain's story head straight for the house in Seattle where he died. It's a fine pilgrimage, but it tells you almost nothing about him. Aberdeen — a rain-soaked logging town two hours west — is where he actually grew up, and it's where the story makes more sense.

His ashes were scattered along the Wishkah River, which runs through town and gets a fraction of the attention of the Seattle house. It's unremarkable in the best way — a real river in a real town, not a monument.
